New members Nigel Cheney, Caron Penney, Vanessa Rolf and Willemien de Villiers were welcomed by Chair, Sue Stone, at the 2016 AGM which was held in London last week.

In August Caron Penney and Katharine Swailes will be part of the New Members showcase at the CAA. Swailes will be showing one of her most recent works made with Theo Moorman Trust funding earlier this year. This is from her Glyphs and Loops series. 

Contemporary Applied Arts | 4 - 27 August 2016

Caron Penney and Katharine Swailes were both selected as new members of the Contemporary Applied Arts in August 2016. 

August 2017

Katharine Swailes has been awarded a grant to help her establish a new series of work titled, 'Glyphs and Loops'. This project follows on from her exhibition in Arundel in June 2015, called Manhattan. The initial series drew on the Manhattan Museum collections of ancient and medieval tapestry and the streets and buildings these collections inhabit.

This talk is part of a programme of events running along side the exhibition John Piper: The Fabric of Modernism.

Penney will explain how in the post war years artists such as Edward Bawden, Graham Sutherland, Henry Moore and John Piper embraced tapestry and how today in a time of austerity artists are turning to textiles again.

Katharine Swailes is exhibiting two tapestries at the Flow Gallery for their White Show from the 30th October. Criss Cross a-134-3 and Criss Cross a-134-2 have been developed especially for the show and are a development from108 crosses, recently exhibited at the Zimmer Stewart Gallery.
