Artist Development

The Artist Development programme provides guidance, support, and encouragement, helping you to overcome challenges, build confidence, and achieve your goals. It enables you to work with a unique group of warm, friendly people who are all experiencing the same feelings and discuss how to progress in a positive way.

Our Mentor

“Hi - I am Caron Penney and I have been working in the arts industry for the last thirty years. I have curated exhibitions, exhibited at some of the major places in London, have my work in prestigious collections and worked with artists and artist professionals all my creative life.”

What you need to know

Artistic Development includes

• Part one is for the development of ideas and finding your focus

• Part two is connecting with your new vision, and working toward a new pathway.

• Part three is discussing your aspirations, planning your future and developing a plan.

You will be part of a small group of between six - seven participants. Our mentor, Caron Penney, will direct the many conversations and dialogue. The ultimate objective is to free you to find your focus, develop ideas toward creating a body of work and feel more confident to work alone and with a definite direction and ultimately exhibit and show your work with confidence now or in the future.

You will be expected to work between sessions and to gather information for our discussions. Participants will learn how to write an artist statement, create a presentation, and give a talk about their art practice. There are many more activities including the use of break out rooms to aid discussion. Part of this discovery may result in your not only working in your chosen art form but making enquiries into other art forms - researching, visiting galleries and exhibitions (where possible). It is essential that you are open to being challenged and happy for your work to evolve. You may have to leave some ideas or inspiration behind you, and shelve them for some other occasions or for another part of your life. As Louise Bourgeois wrote, “It is not so much where my motivation comes from but rather how it manages to survive”.  Identifying your personal inspiration amongst all the noise and chaos of life is sometimes hard but it is important to hold onto it so it can survive and then thrive.

Whats our students have said

"The impact of your Artist Development program is still reverberating Caron. It helped me to get perspective on my work, gave me confidence.

You managed to create a sense of community and being-in-this-together amongst us participants. My peers on the programme are an ongoing source of inspiration, as are you! I look forward to the next instalment!"

Kathleen King

Action Researcher, Consultant, Coach.

"I joined Caron's course to develop greater clarity of purpose in my creative practice within a peer group. I gained so much more than that! Caron's light touch and quiet commitment to guiding her mentees within a clear framework swiftly created a safe space for exchange and growth. The group size and pacing of the course supported an accelerated development as we examined our practice and the insights, perspectives and support of others remains a core benefit. We are still in touch inspiring and encouraging one another!"
