Jeni Ross

Telling Time: Moment and Movement

Woven tapestry | 120 × 220 cm | Private Collection

A commission by artist Jeni Ross, realised in collaboration with Atelier Weftfaced and woven by Katharine Swailes.

It was a great pleasure to work with Jeni Ross on this commission, translating her vibrant collage into woven tapestry. The project brought together Jeni's distinctive visual language and our shared interest in the possibilities of tapestry as a means of interpreting and transforming an image.

Titled Telling Time: Moment and Movement, the tapestry explores the passing of time and the relationship between interior and exterior spaces. Working from Jeni's original collage, the challenge was to retain the energy, colour and movement of the composition while finding a way to express these qualities through the structure and material of woven tapestry.

The weaving began as winter approached and was completed with the arrival of spring. The gradual development of the work on the loom seemed to echo the transition from darkness to light, as the changing seasons unfolded alongside the making of the tapestry.

The completed work has now been installed in its new home in West London.
